Nowa praca wideo Zbynka Baladrana Budowanie archiwum powstała na wystawę Inne miasto, inne życie i jest wynikiem trzymiesięcznej rezydencji artysty w Warszawie.

Głównym obszarem zainteresowań autora była najnowsza historia Polski a w szczególności ruchy protestacyjne i demonstracje od przełomowego roku 1968 aż po dzień dzisiejszy. W ramach swojej pracy Zbynek Baladrán zgromadził szereg sloganów związanych z politycznymi postulatami wyrażanymi podczas ulicznych manifestacji tego okresu. W filmie dokumentuje proces zawieszania tych haseł wypisanych na oddzielnych kartkach na specjalnie przygotowaną siatkę z czerwonych nici […] w swoim warszawskim mieszkaniu.

Ponad 150 haseł zgromadzonych przez artystę to postulaty o różnym, nieraz diametralnie przeciwstawnym charakterze, które wpłynęły znacząco na kształt zbiorowej debaty publicznej w Polsce. Slogany często wyrażają podobne emocje, nawet jeżeli były formułowane z wrogich sobie pozycji politycznych. Zawieszone słowa stają się przestrzennymi artefaktami. W jaki sposób te werbalne frazy wyrażające pewne idee konstytuują […] przestrzeń publicznej debaty we współczesnej Polsce?

W swojej twórczości Zbynek Baladrán podejmuje pytanie o sposób, w jaki archiwa przeszłości kształtują indywidualną teraźniejszość, o to jakie elementy, obrazy i słowa tworzą skomplikowane i często dramatyczne osobiste doświadczenia współczesnych mieszkańców Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej. Film Budowanie archiwum stanowi kontynuację tych poszukiwań, jednak w tym projekcie artysta po raz pierwszy skoncentrował się wyłącznie na słowach pozbawionych reprezentacji obrazowej. Slogany znalezione przez autora w Warszawie odnoszą się do sporów debaty publicznej, jednak pozbawione swoich specyficznych kontekstów, stają się abstrakcyjne, wyrażając raczej pośredniczącą rolę języka w relacji jednostki wobec społeczeństwa niż stanowiąc faktyczne kwestie polityczne. […] Film Zbynka Baladrána konfrontuje nas z pytaniem o wpływ, jaki relacja z przeszłością wyrażona przez minione hasła protestacyjne, wywiera na konstrukcję jednostek w przestrzeni publicznej.[…] Sugeruje, że obecnie w dobie radykalnego zerwania z najnowszą historią jesteśmy obciążeni przez złożone, osobiste archiwum historyczne - sieć niemożliwych do powiązania w sensowną całość elementów.

Zbynek Baladran’s film “Archive Building” for the exhibition “Another City, Another Life” is the product of a three month residency in Warsaw focusing on the contemporary past. In his research, Zbynek explored archives to collect slogans from protest movements and demonstrations from the key year 1968 right up until the present. The film records the process of hanging these slogans, each written on a separate piece of card, on a web of red string, like so much encumbering washing, around the space of the flat in which he lived in Warsaw.
The over 150 slogans that Zbynek collected are from protest movements of very different kinds, often diametrically opposed to one another, that have taken to the streets or influenced the collective debate in Poland during the recent historical past. On occasions, they express the same emotions even if the political positions they come from are implacable enemies. By hanging them in a net, the words become artifacts with spatial form: in what ways do these verbal phrases, these expressions of ideas constitute the particular public space of debate (or even a fatigue with it) with which we are confronted in today’s Poland?
Zbynek Baladran’s work focuses on the question of the way in which archives of the past constitute an individual’s present. What elements, what images and words, web together to form the complex and dramatic whole that forms the personal experience of today’s inhabitants of Central and Eastern Europe? The film for “Archive Building” continues this experimentation, but was the first time when Zbynek has focused solely on verbal expressions without any image representation. without an accompanying visual representation.

The slogans this Czech artist found in Warsaw are familiar from public debate, but isolated from their particular contexts they become abstract, expressing less particular issues than the mediation that language plays between individual and social whole.

For Zbynek, the research into this work indicated the ways in which, despite similar histories, the public space of the Czech Republic and Slovakia function differently from that of Poland. What this film confronts us with is the question of how our relationship to the past of verbal slogans that we carry around inside us influences our constructions of ourselves as individuals in public space. (Perhaps it could be a suggestion that the relation of individual to language, so important and apparently universal in psychoanalysis, in this part of the world needs to be examined in the light of the particular modes in which language functioned in the recent history of political protest.) In the contemporary moment which emphasizes a radical caesura with the recent past, Zbynek’s film rather suggests that we are all inhabited by a complex, personal historical archive: a web of often incomprehensible bricks between which it is difficult to see a meaningful relationship.
